CJ Reunites with Her Paternal Family at the Farm

A Dog's Journey

CJ Reunites with Her Paternal Family at the Farm is the long-awaited family reunion arranged by Trent after he locates Ethan and Hannah Montgomery in public records. The journey ends not with a new home but with CJ’s first direct encounter with relatives she has been separated from: Hannah recognizes her as her granddaughter, and the two embrace while the gathered family watches. Max experiences the same return through scent, recognizing Hannah before CJ reaches her.

The Journey and Its Destination

The reunion takes shape during a long drive with Trent and Max. The trip is physically uncomfortable: the weather is hot whenever they stop, while the place where they spend the night is so cold that Max sleeps beneath the blankets with CJ. Trent has a separate room, but Max finds that it smells much like theirs. The contrast between the heat outdoors and the cold overnight rest frames the drive as a taxing passage rather than an easy visit.

On the second day, CJ has been sleeping through much of the drive. When she wakes, her sudden excitement reveals that she suspects where Trent is taking her. She asks whether they are going to the place she has in mind, and Trent confirms it. Her next question is how he found it. He explains that he used public records under the names Ethan and Hannah Montgomery, then called to say CJ wanted to visit. From inside his crate, Max responds to hearing Ethan and Hannah spoken of together by wagging a little. The names themselves carry significance for him before the destination comes into view.

Arrival at The Farm

After more driving, Max wakes to a scent that makes him dizzy; he recognizes the place before the car stops. Eager to get out, he cries, and Trent opens the crate and holds his leash. Max bounds into the grass as warm evening air reaches him. The recognition is bodily and immediate: the remembered scent identifies The Farm before the people there have even greeted CJ.

Several people pour out of the house and run down to see both CJ and Max. CJ uncertainly asks whether one woman is Aunt Rachel, and the woman answers her with an affectionate embrace. The greeting makes the reunion a family gathering rather than a private meeting. People mill around as the newcomers are welcomed, and Cindy invites everyone inside, handing Max’s leash to the little girl named Gracie.

Hannah and CJ Recognize Each Other

Max climbs the wooden steps with more effort than when he was a bigger dog, but he knows his way and pushes through the doorway first. When he sees an elderly woman seated in the living room, he recognizes her scent. He bounds across the room and into her lap: it is Hannah, whom Max understands as Ethan’s mate. Hannah laughs as he squirms and licks her face. Trent calls him away in a stern tone, and Max hurries off Hannah’s lap before Trent catches his leash.

The human recognition follows. CJ addresses Hannah as her grandmother; Hannah rises slowly, and CJ walks to her. They hug for a long time, both crying. The narration describes the love and happiness between them as passing through the embrace and touching everyone watching. The scene thus gives the family reunion a visible center: the public-record search and the long drive lead to a relationship confirmed not by paperwork but by the two women’s recognition and sustained embrace.

A Visit, Not a Permanent Return

The family does not move to The Farm to live, but CJ and Max stay there for more than a week. Max races around with his nose down, tracking familiar scents. The farm’s ducks are still there, including a whole family in the pond. He watches them without chasing: there is no profit in it, and the two largest ducks are as big as he is.

That encounter with the ducks gives the return a quieter measure of change. The Farm remains familiar, but Max is now small enough to compare himself with the ducks and find the difference unsettling. For CJ, the visit restores contact with family; for Max, it is also a return to a place held in scent and habit. Neither response turns the stay into a permanent settlement. The reunion matters precisely as a reconnection: CJ reaches Hannah and the wider family, while the visit remains a temporary time together at The Farm.
